Perera, Systems biological assessment of immunity to mild versus severe COVID-19 infection in humans, 2020.08.11, https://science.sciencemag.org/content/early/2020/08/10/science.abc6261 . This article analyes immune responses in 76 COVID-19 patients and 69 healthy individuals and the results highlight molecules such as EN-RAGE or TNFSF14, and their receptors, which could represent attractive therapeutic target against COVID-19.

Pedro M Folegatti, Katie J Ewer, Parvinder K Aley, Brian Angus, Prof Stephan Becker, Sandra Belij-Rammerstorfer, et al., Safety and immunogenicity of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine against SARS-CoV-2: a preliminary report of a phase 1/2, single-blind, randomised controlled trial, 2020.07.20, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0140-6736(20)31604-4 . ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 showed an acceptable safety profile, and homologous boosting increased antibody responses. These results, together with the induction of both humoral and cellular immune responses, support large-scale evaluation of this candidate vaccine in an ongoing phase 3 programme.

This study shows that the Ad5-vectored COVID-19 vaccine at 5 × 1010 viral particles is safe, and induced significant immune responses in the majority of recipients after a single immunisation.

Christine M Salvatore, Jin-Young Han, Karen P Acker, Priyanka Tiwari, Jenny Jin, Michael Brandler, et al., Neonatal management and outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic: an observation cohort study, 2020.07.23, https://doi.org/10.1016/S2352-4642(20)30235-2 . this report suggests that perinatal transmission of COVID-19 is unlikely to occur if correct hygiene precautions are undertaken, and that allowing neonates to room in with their mothers and direct breastfeeding are safe procedures when paired with effective parental education of infant protective strategies.

26. Long H Nguyen, David A Drew, Mark S Graham, Amit D Joshi, Chuan-Guo Guo, Wenjie Ma, et al. , Risk of COVID-19 among front-line health-care workers and the general community: a prospective cohort study, 2020.07.31, https://doi.org/10.1016/S2468-2667(20)30164-X . In the UK and the USA, risk of reporting a positive test for COVID-19 was increased among front-line health-care workers. Health-care systems should ensure adequate availability of PPE and develop additional strategies to protect health-care workers from COVID-19, particularly those from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic backgrounds. Additional follow-up of these observational findings is needed.

The estimated 60-day survival of ECMO-rescued patients with COVID-19 was similar to that of studies published in the past 2 years on ECMO for severe ARDS. If another COVID-19 outbreak occurs, ECMO should be considered for patients developing refractory respiratory failure despite optimised care.

Noa Biran, Andrew Ip, Jaeil Ahn, Ronaldo C Go, Shuqi Wang, Shivam Mathura, et al., Tocilizumab among patients with COVID-19 in the intensive care unit: a multicentre observational study, 2020.08.14, https://doi.org/10.1016/S2665-9913(20)30277-0 . In this observational study, patients with COVID-19 requiring ICU support who received tocilizumab had reduced mortality.

There are hard-won lessons from the ‘Spanish Flu’, and similarities with the COVID-19 crisis, that merit reflection on how armed conflicts can influence the ways we talk about and struggle to mitigate the current pandemic.

DiVenere, Hung-Che Kuo, Structure-based design of prefusion-stabilized SARS-CoV-2 spikes, 2020.07.23 , https://science.sciencemag.org/content/early/2020/07/22/science.abd0826 . this study identified HexaPro, whose A 3.2 Å-resolution cryo-EM structure confirmed that it retains the prefusion spike conformation. High-yield production of a stabilized prefusion spike protein will accelerate the development of vaccines and serological diagnostics for SARS-CoV-2.
